Invoking the Muses

The title of our blog, of course, comes from the Greek goddesses of artistic inspiration, the Muses. The ancient Greeks recognized nine sacred forms, or media, of art.

If you could be dazzlingly gifted in an art form, what would it be, and why? Do you have the soul of a poet? Do you think you can dance? Are you entranced by stage lights?

Also: we will begin our unit on artistic media with visual art. What do you know about art/art history? What types/genres/periods of visual art (painting and sculpture) and artists appeal to you?

  1. I'm not really into dancing or stage lights but I could be a world class poet. Back in 8th grade I wrote a poem about bunnies. It was pretty good even though I got a D on it for some reason. It went something like this...."bunnies hop and pop"

  2. I almost forgot.. I don't like Egyptian art. Everything else is fine.

  3. I was going to say i would be a poet but i realized i couldn't top mikes poem so i am going to go with being a master shredder on the didgeridoo. i know that paintings are boring and for some reason people pay to get in museums and look at them when you can see them on the computer. the only visual art that appeals to me would be......none.

  4. I have no gift in any form of art. I can't write or dance or sing but if I could have one of these it would be to write well so that I could get good grades on all of my English projects.I don't really like to look at art because you can only look at one picture for so long. My mom made me go to an art museum with her one time and I was bored out of my mind.

  5. I agree with the post above me, I have no gift in any form of art. Im not really interested in any sort of art it's just not my thing. I definitely do not have the soul of a poet because when it comes to any sort of writting i struggle to finish my paper, poem, etc. Overall im not really an art person, and I don't really know much about art.

  6. I don't really have any gift in anything artistic. If i could i would want to be able to draw and paint. I think painting is fun and you can express yourself in anyway. Also i would want to sing! I like to sing in my car, but im not very good. So i would like to have that gift!

  7. I suppose that I could be considered a musical person I can sort of play a synthesizer and I can scratch on turntables. It would be pretty legit to be a DJ. As far as visual art goes paintings can be cool although most paintings aren't of anything interesting, and modern art looks cool but has no real meaning, poems are cool but I'm not deep enough for most of them.

  8. If I was to be gifted in an art form I would be a bboy. I would go to baltimore and pick battles with other breakdancers and beat them all out. Then I'd move to new york and beat all the breakdancers then until i was the best.
And I don't like any art forms or artists.

  9. I am not nor have ever been, nor have the intention of being a poet or author. However I love music and I would mot certainly be music.

I know art history is a bunch of old guys painting fruit or naked women (or just without eyebrows). Architecture (spelling phail) and music defently appeal to me more

  10. As Mrs. Dixon is well aware, I like to doodle on every available piece of paper, even the margins of papers I turn in to be graded. The only thing I really wish I had was more patience and a better eye for detail; most of my drawings are really cartoony because I don't have the attention span to spend a lot of time drawing a lot of detail into a picture. As for art history, I like the modern movement because the paintings are so simplistic (i.e. a dot on a canvas or random splashs of paint) that I could make one, come up with a cock-and-bull story about what the painting means, and sell it for a lot of money.

  11. As an afterthought, simple doodles can still be massively entertainig: to check out an example, go to www.xkcd.com. XKCD is a webcomic composed entirely of stick figures.

  12. I would absolutly love to be able to sing...well...haha I love to sing I'm just terrible at it. I do like certain art but the art pieces I like I don't know how to categorize.I'm not a fan of abstrat though I mean I could finger paint on a canvas and call it abstract. Des that mean it should be worth hundreds if not thousands? Uh yea....no.

  13. If I could be gifted in any art form, it would definitely be related to music. I don't have a great singing voice and have to work at playing instruments well. I love music and it is a great way to connect with people, so to be gifted in it would be amazing. I don't know too much about art history, but vaguely know of a few of the big art movements. I like some Impressionist works, and am fascinated by works on large scales, like paintings that take up a whole wall and the Sistene Chapel.

  14. If I could be gifted in any form of art it would be music more specifically rap. I mean i could be the next eminem. And everyone knows that he and 50 cent are the best artists out there. And i basically know nothing about art or art history.

  15. I would most likely choose music. I really regret that I never learned an instrument when i was younger, although I did 9 years or martial arts instead.

I know a small amount of art history, only from my middle school art classes and Art through the ages freshman year. Though I have never really been into art, I can apprieciate (if I spelled that right) good art. Although good art is a vague term, since everyone has a different opinion about it. Pretty much any art that has proof of skill such as potraits, land scapes, and other things of the kind taht take skill to draw or paint or whichever. This stuff people like to call modern art is usually a joke. Seriously people just say "HEY LOOK I BENT A BUNCH OF METAL...ITS ART!!!" Really? stuff that that is dumb. But if someone actually can cut metal or weld metal into a legitimate object or something then possible. None of this I can splash paint onto a canvas or i can squish clothes together into a tight square or something. Pointless stuff people do for attention I think.

  16. if i could be gifted in any art form it would be to draw/paint. it would be so rad to have mad drawing/painting skills so i could impress the ladies with portrait i painted of them. also if i was good at painting i would be like van gogh and cut my ears off so i would never have to listen to my mom again.. sike i would just make a bunch of money from my art and move out.

  17. I'm definitely not likely to fall upon any visual art talent the way things are now (even though genetics are definitely in my favor). I would probably want to have talent as some kind of writer (probably not a poet) who could capture people's attention and force them to think about things. I could also further my musical talent but to get that to the point that it would dazzle people probably wouldn't be that enjoyable.

I know very little about art history, but I do enjoy looking at Cubist paintings.

  18. If I could be dazzlingly gifted in an art form, there is no doubt in my mind tat I would like to be able to write literature. Possibly the most meaningful, beautiful, and personal art that can exist; a good book can change the world more than anything else can. (Just look at the Bible or "Mein Kampf" [FYI I have no idea if I spelled that right])
While I do not know much about art history, I am a huge fan of modern and Eastern art forms. I'm also not a really big fan of two dimensional art; sculptures or anything in three dimensions seems to reveal more than lines and colors on paper.

  19. if I could be gifted in an art form it would be writing. With writing I could express my ideas in poems stories and literature (and get good grades in all of my classes), Someone once told me that most people cant every really express in writing what they are thinking in their head. That the good writers can do this. I wish that I had talent at writing so I could have a voice like that. I also wish I was good at writing so that I could write awesome songs like T. swift.
I don’t really know anything about art history honestly. That’s probably not good. One of the things I think of is Greek sculptures. Those are really cool bc I don’t understand how they sculpt human like figures out of stone.

  20. If I could be gifted in anything artistic, I would chose to be a brilliant writer and an brilliant actress. Theatre and literature are my two loves, and to absolutely excell at both (or just one) would be wonderful. As it is, I have some talent in both, but nearly enough to be labeled "gifted".

As for knowledge of art history, mine is severely lacking. I know basically nothing, though I do enjoy art. I don't have a particular favorite artist or style, though I don't usually care for modern art. I mean really, putting a bowl of fruit on a shelf to rot is not art. That's called failure to eat well and clean up after yourself.

  21. If I could be gifted in anything artistic, I would want to be a hip hop dancer( like step up 1&2). I think it is so cool to watch and they are extremely talented.

  22. I would want to be a sculptor probably because i love using clay and for whatever reason im semi decent at it, and it's a lot more relaxing that painting or using other dry media. Its a fun way to do art and is very hands on so i would like to be AWESOME at it.

  23. Im not really gifted in dancing but always willing to shake it a lil. I can spit some mad rhymes but not a legit poet. I dont mind being infront of people on stage but i just dont have any talents to share once on stage.

  24. I am nothing of a dancer or a writer. I'm lucky if I can spell my own name write sometimes. The only thing artistic thing I have going for me is music. I love to play. It's the only thing that I'm good at period. I just love the feeling when the music your playing just flows through you and you really get sucked into the sound and beauty of it.
