"Well we're all in the mood for a melody..."

We'll spend most of the time between now and winter break focused on music in one form or another. Thus, what kind of melody are you in the mood for?

What music do you listen do, what do you resolutely not listen to, and why? What attracts you to a new song or band? Lyrics, popularity, beat, instrumentals, bizarre band fashion sense? How do you know if the music is any good?

Also, how do you prefer to listen to music--alone, singing along with friends, on vinyl, subwoofers blaring, through earbuds? Why? What is it about that experience that makes the music better?

And if nobody gets the title reference, I may cry. Or give you extra homework. Not sure yet.

  1. I listen to lots of different music, notably my favorites are The Who, Smash Mouth, John Denver, and Coldplay. Unfortunately, John Denver is dead, Smash Mouth is virtually broken up, and The Who still exists but their new music isn't nearly as good. At least Coldplay will be around for a while I hope. Most of these artists combine meaningful lyrics with long periods of good instrumentals where you can just think. I especially do not enjoy mindless banter from the likes of Miley Cyrus, etc, and also most modern country music.

I prefer listening to music alone. If I'm not, I can't resist the urge to tap my feet or otherwise dance awkwardly somehow, so I just try to avoid it.

  2. I listen to a lot of different genres, but I guess my favorites are alternative, rock, and some pop. The only ones I can think of that I don't really listen to are opera and the really out there electronic kind of thing. Lyrics and instrumentals attract me to a new band, not necessarily popularity, except the song might grow on me if I'm exposed to it more. I also have the reverse happen though, if a song is constantly on the radio and I get tired of it.
I like listening to music alone so that I can sing and not care about how it sounds, but I also like singing along with friends, because it's a way to connect.

And don't worry Miss Dixon, I could recognize Piano Man even if I didn't want to.

  3. I love classic rock and im pumped you made a billy joel reference. I refuse to listen to pop/rap because it makes me want to vomit. Country is pretty bad too, but some of old country is acceptable like John Denver. Some consider the Eagles country and theyre pretty good. New bands are pretty bad but some uphold classic rock like the Foo Fighters.

  4. I like pretty much anything but country. I just don't like the sound of it. I like listening to music as I'm running so I usually don't get slow songs. I would rather not listen to music through headphones

  5. No worries! I got the reference to "Piano Man." Please don't give me extra homework!

I generally listen to classic rock, usually bands like the Who, Queen, and Pink Floyd. However, I don't listen to music religiously like most of my friends, and I don't really get the same sort of enjoyment out of music that they do.

I often find myself humming jingles from the video games I play. I'm starting to get a little worried that they might become my preferred brand of music.

  6. I listen to rap music. I will not listen to country. Country is terrible it sounds so bad. Rap has nice lyrics and it gets you pumped up for sports also. The beat in rap is so much better than any other style. Another type that i dislike is screamo. It isnt even music and you cant even understand what they are saying.

  7. I don't really really listen to country or rock music. Some rock is okay but some of the rock music can give me a headache. If the music is any good i know that, if I actually sit there and take the time to listen to the song. Listening to music through ear phones is something i don't really like doing because having things in my ears bothers me. The only time i will listen to music through ear phones is if I am working out. My favorite place to listen to music is when I am driving in my car with my friends. Or if i am tired I will blare the music so I don't fall asleep.

  9. I listen to a lot of showtunes, being a hardcore theatre person. But I listen to a lot of other stuff too. Beatles, Coldplay, Regina Specktor, Damien Rice, Snow Patrol, Simon and Garfunkel, Billy Joel, Jimmy Eat World, and others are a few of my favs. Basically, I like anything but country. If you give me something I can sing and dance too, I'm happy.

As for listening to music, I do that anywhere, anytime, in the company of anyone. Of course its more fun to sing and dance with friends, but I sing by myself or in the company of strangers. Like I said: theatre person.

PS The title is from "Piano Man" by Billy Joel. Didn't I mention he's one of my favorites? "IT's nine oclock on a saturday, the regular crowd shuffles in, there's an old man sitting next to me, making love to his tonic and gin. He say's son can you play me a memory, i'm not really sure how it goes, but its sad and its sweet, and i knew it complete when i wore a younger man's clothes. Sing us a song, you're the piano man, sing us a song tonight. Well we're all in the mood for a melody, and you've got us feeling alright..."

  10. pretty much all main stream music sucks
. if you are not enough of an indivual to find your own unqiue music preference/genre/style then you shouldnt listen to music. rap sucks, country sucks, classic rock sucks, japanese pop sucks, folk sucks, emo sucks, blue grass sucks, british techno sucks. pretty much everything sucks. i prefer to listen to the sounds of the ocean, birds singing and the sound of a fierce wind on a nice day. if i had to listen to some kind of music, i would only listen to one song, that would be "surfin bird" by the trashmen. cause didnt u know the bird, the bird, the birds the w0rd

  11. i listen to basically everything besides pigs dying. my favorites would be 90's music like third eye blind, jimmy eats world, blind melon, and of course blink and others and also i really love reggae music like rebelution, bob marley, burning spear, it is so good to listen to when you want to lay back and relax, especially in the summer. another of my all times favorites are the doors and the beatles, you just have to love them, they are so amazing. and finally, i know a lot of people are going to disagree with me on this, but i am a sucker for slow jams, i LOVE them. its actually kinda weird. the newer slow jams though. the old ones are torture. but artists like ne-yo, r-kelly, and usher are great

  12. Music has noooo bounds for me. Classical, 90's rap, some smooth J, I appreciate select songs of all different forms and compositions. I never KNOW if music is good, I can just feel it in my very soul: songs call out to me randomly with little pattern and no regards to cultural cleavages.
The best way to listen to music is alone; hopefully i will have a guitar in my hands as well when I am listening. What makes being alone so important in music is the same as why it is important to be alone to appreciate art or cinema: it is all about personal interpretation. Music means the most to you and to you alone, and no person could possibly understand that meaning. With no distractions and a reflective mind, a simple song can change a persons life (and end it, in some cases).

  13. Oh yeah. Country music is the same thing as taking the Mona Lisa, cutting a hole in her mouth, and defecating in it. I mean it from the bottom of my heart when I say that, if I could, I would take every whiny minor-pitched country singer and leave them alone with 42 ravenous tigers.

  14. I'm sick of people not even giving country a chance. They here someone say "country" and automatically say they dont like it. I have some news for all of you. Brad Paisley will shred your face off on guitar. Contemperary Country is good music! Eldersburg is more country then it is city and for some reason more people like rap. I also like all types of rock, and screamo. I play guitar and its fun to play rock and screamo. If i didnt play guitar i probably wouldnt have aquired tastes for these types of music. Classical music is good if it is played by tenacious d. I am also randomly a fan of Lonley Island, slightly stoopid, flight of the conchordes, The Expandables, ZZ top and the monkeys riding tigers. I like listening to music at an average level preferably without other people because they just complain about my taste in music.

Most recently my favorite to listen to is rihanna, lil wayne, and pink. Pink has always been my favorite though. And i like country too I don't know why people hate it so much, some country songs are really good. Like Taylor Swift, I love her. I think she has really good music and I love her lyrics!

  17. I love music. I can listen to just about everything, not so much country but i do love taylor swift and rascal flatts. I love taylors swifts lyrics, in just about everyone of her songs its about rain. I like to listen to music mostly through headphones, on my computer, or in my car.

  18. I like alot of different types of music. Don't dis country, because alot of their lyrics are written better than other artists. Taylor Swift is probably my fav artist. hands down. she actually plays her own music and writes her own songs, and is not manufactured in a studio like most artist today. I also listen to other music like the classics like the beatles, and techno, pop, even some rap. I think i judge if music is good by if its catchy or makes me feel something. I love listening to music in my car I usually just listen to it with headphones or on the computer.

  19. I will listen to any music i just dont like Rock and heavy metal, it just sucks. I dont mind some country music. My favorite artist is lil wayne no doubt. I listen to music probably 90 percent of my time. In my car, anytime im in my room music is on. We listen to music at career and tech all day. I work at a bar so music is always on. Basically music is awesome.

  20. I think at one time or another I've listened to the majority of all the genres. My fovorites are alternative, rock, r&b, sometimes rap, sometimes country, showtunes, ect. My favorite type of songs are the ones that have a good beat and something i can sing to. Also i tend to listen to songs with meaningful lyrics and what i listen to depends on my mood. If im happy I'll listen to hip hop, showtunes, pop and if im sad or frustrated I'll listen to alternative, rock etc.

  21. It doesn't matter where I listen to music, but usually it is in the car or my room, but very often it is with friends and family also. I hate it when people listen to good music quietly, I have to have it loud to enjoy it.
For me to enjoy a new band I have to be able to understand the lyrics, and the must have actual meaning. For example I have always liked John Mayer, but lately I have really listened to his new CD because it has a ton of meaning. And based on the mood I am in at the time is what allows me to decide which artist I woant to listen to

  22. I don't pay attention to genres much. If it sounds good I'll listen to it I guess. I really don't like rap though.
I usually listen to music alone; I usually use these headphones that make it difficult to hear what anyone else is saying so I avoid listening to music while others are around. That, and it avoids the question of what I'm listening to as it is probably stuff no-one here has heard of before (Like dBu music).

  23. I will listen to anything that comes on the radio (except country of course). I have over the past year been getting more and more into classical and orchestral music. I guess it's because I've been playing it alot more and more. Now I'll pull it up on my Ipod when I'm driving somewhere far and it's the only thing that'll keep me awake.

  25. No rap, no country, no reggae, no bluegrass, no jazz.

Architecture in helsinki is really nice, of montreal is amazing ( and also does the tune for the outback steakhouse commercial). The kooks are good for some nice vocals and the lead singer of Wolf Parade has the most amazing voice ever. A recent band i just started getting in to is Passion Pit, and their stuff is great as well.
