Free Week, Part Two

Ok, this is your chance to take over the blog (within reason; no proclaiming yourself benevolent dictator or anything--that's still my title). Use this week's post to review a movie, praise a band no one's heard of but should have, point out a news story about the art world (we're starting our music unit in the coming week--did you know what heavy metal does to plants?) or continue the debate about a previous topic, etc, etc, etc....

You have to keep it school-appropriate, avoid name-calling and room destruction, and talk about a medium of art. Other than that, you're on your own, kids!

  1. Its important to note that if Mrs. Dixon is the benevolent dictator, I will one day own half of this blog.
It is also important to note that i have just finished two texts today: one on a controversial theory to developmental economics, the other the Qur'an for the second time. The theory book was a bit bland I'll admit, but every time I read the Qur'an, it moves me in a way no other read/spoken word could. It is poetry, it is guidelines to a better life, it is art, and THE most self evident and incorruptible literature ever written. Some of the ideas are raw and inappropriate in modern society, (provisions on beating your wives, for example) but the message and path to finding a monotheistic God are clear, highly rewarded, and in every way achievable as recounted by the Prophet Allah.

But don't think I'm a terrorist. Or I will bomb you, suckaaa

  2. i think that music should not fall under the art catagory. art is worthless. you just hang it on walls, music is much more. the band monkeys riding tigers produce the most mind blowing shredtastic music. Oh, and the greatest didgeridoo player is Mark Atkins. hes my idol.

  3. Well I found this kid on YouTube who is four years old and can play the crap out of the drums. His name is Jonah. I just think everyone should be aware of him and his talent. He covers songs from System of a Down, Michael Jackson, Blink 182, Ozzy Osbourne, and a ton more. He is a prodigy who will probably be extremely famous in a year or so. I'm surprised he hasn't been on Oprah yet she lives for that stuff. I thinks it's amazing to be so good at the drums when you are only four. I probably couldn't even walk then.

ps. What happens to the plants?

  4. Atmosphere is a rap group that is very underground and not well known. They refuse to take record labels and even recently came out with a album called Strickly Leakage that is downloadable from the rhymesayers site. The group consists of Slug the rapper, Ant the producer and Spawn, a former member. They are very lyrical and have really good beats. My favorite songs by them are Painting and Sunshine.

  5. I recently saw the movie Paranormal Activity, it was not like everyone said it was. It was very weird and not good, it was not very scary. I would not suggest to go see this movie.

  6. This last weekend I saw the movie the box, and it was awful. I thought it would be interesting but it went on forever and you know that the girl will end up pushing that stupid button so there was no point in even watching it. I would not recommend seeing it.

  7. all i have to say is that mike you are wrong. Dandelions are 100 % weeds and should be killed along with the rest of them. They are obnoxious to look at with their bright yellow color. They make beautiful lawns look crappy and they infestation to grass. Who praises good dandelions, nobody cause they are not pretty looking.

  8. Army of Me is an alternative band that I just heard about recently. They've been around for a while, but just released their first full length album in 2007. They have some pretty good songs i guess.

Also, I checked out that drummer Jonah that someone mentioned and he's so cute! Go watch his youtube videos!

  9. The movie paranormal activity was talked up about being the scariest movie ever. I happened to see it a couple of weeks ago and it was not scary at all. I could tell what was going to happen next the whole time and it was just revolved around all the other scary movies out there. I would not recommend seeing this movie, if your used to just regular scary movies.

  12. I have had virtually no time for any kind of culture over the past few weeks other than the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. No TV really, and very little time for listening to music or reading the newspaper. However, during downtime in my classes I've been reading the new book The Audacity to Win by Barack Obama's campaign manager David Plouffe. It is pretty well-written (not the best though) and gives a very thorough insight into the inside of a political campaign. It also stays pretty neutral in the actual politics, so it is certainly possible to read it without throwing the book down in disgust or something if you're not a Democrat. I highly recommend this book.

Also, for the record, I agree with Mike that dandelions should not be considered a weed.

  13. People say I need to be more open minded to music, but i disagree. I like my classic rock and im sticking to it.

  14. I wrote a college essay for UMBC a few weeks ago. The prompt went something like: "Describe a work of art you recently saw/read/watched, etc. Describe what about this piece impressed you and made it so powerful." Daring to be different, I decided to write about the satirical value of "World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War" by Max Brooks. My only hope is that the person reading my essay can get past the title of the "work of art" and concentrate on the really kick-awesome essay I wrote.

  15. I listen to really weird music, ska and indie pop stuff like that. its good but isnt the usual crap that's on the radio. bands like arcade fire ( they sung the Where the Wild Things Are song called Wake Up), Of Montreal (the outback steakhouse song? yeah, thats their tune), my alltime favorite band the Kooks, and Broken Social Scene. Explosions in the Sky and Sigur Ros are good for instrumental bliss.

  16. I haven't watched a new movie, or any movie for that matter, in quite a while...but I did just read an amazing book: My Sister's Keeper. I don't know if anyone else is a Jodi Picoult fan, but I recommend picking up a book by her and reading it-they are all amazing. Anyway, MSK made me cry so much...I could barely get through the last few chapters.

  19. My sister's keeper is also a really good movie. The ending is different(i wont explain why) but i actually liked the movie ending better, which usually never happens when books are adapted to movies.
A good band is every avenue. I feel like alot of people know about them already but thats who i am listening to while i am writing this.

  20. Again, rap usually annoys the hell out of me, but within reason, such as old rap can be alright. Country is alright, I grew up around a lot of it so I can bare it but I won't listen to it on my own. Modern rock is ok, depending on the band. Most of it isn't like classic rock, where creativity ran wild. That is why I listen to Pink Floyd and other classic rock band, because of the amazing creativity.

  21. I have to disagree with the movie "The Box" being bad. I saw it just on a whim and I thought it was really good. Yeah you knew she was going to press the button; if she didn't you wouldn't have a movie. The whole idea behind it in the end was really cool. Showing us how flawed as human beings we are.
